and under - equipped small' army of indigenous people, mostly farmers, defeated the invading French
Army, a welt-armed professionafforce, that proved to 6e the catalyst which provided the .91e4can
people with confidence to persevere in ultimate triumph over the French in 1867; and
AREAS, the people of .91e.jcan heritage have 6rought these same values of se f reliance
and determination to the vnitedStates, and more importantly to the Yakima valley; and
AREAS, many .91e4can /Latin %fispanic community members have served valiantly
and courageously in the VS armed forces in defending our great nation, and contribute to the
community with Little recognition or acknowledgement; and
AREAS, the .91e4can /Latino /.Jfispanic community in Yakima has enriched the
cultural diversity in education, arts, and business and wishes to acknowledge their culture and
strong family values with the entire community for 6etter understanding of all cultures; and
AREAS, festivals contri6ute to tourism as an important economic development tooffor
rural' communities, and more specificaCCy for downtown revitalization; and
AREAS, the City of Yakima recognizes the cultural and economic contri6utions of the
.91e4can /Latin %fispanic community; and
WIPEREAS, the .?fispanic Cham6er of Commerce of Yakima County supports the efforts of
the City of Yakima to enhance downtown 6y hosting the 15tf Annual Cinco de Ilayo Cultural'
Fiesta on Saturday and Sunday, May 7, and 8, 2016, as well as other related activities throughout
the week.
NOW, TIfER,EFOR,E, 1, Avina Gutierrez, Mayor of the City of Yakima and on 6eha f of
the City Council, do hereby proclaim Ilay 1 - 9, 2016 as
CIWC DE .14A TO - Cultural Week
in the City of Yakima and urge all citizens to join us in recognizing and participating in this cultural'
event.
