As we prepare to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr., federal holiday, we reflect on the
history of civil rights in America and honor Dr. King for the power of his intellect, the truth of
his words, and the e.,(ampCe of his courage. Dr. King called on our g\ration to ensure equal
justice under Caw and uphold our founding ideals of fife, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
for ad people.
Only when our children are free to pursue their fuffineasure of success — unhindered by the
color of their skin, their gender, the faith in their heart, the people they Cove, or the fortune of
their birth — wiffwe have reached our destination.
Dr. King believed that ad people are made in God's image and created equal...Ife dedicated his
life to empowering people and challenged them to lift up their neighbors and communities..Ife
encouraged Americans to Cookpast their differences and refused to rest until our ration
fulfilled its pledge of Liberty and justice for ad.
Today, Cet us askourseCves what Dr. King believed to be life's most urgent and persistent
question: "What am I doing for others ?"
WOW DfERE FORE, the Yakima City Council hereby proclaims the weekof Janualy 17
through January 23, 2016 as
MARTIN LVTifERKING, J12. WEEK
and encourage everyone to acknowledge Martin Luther King, Jr. and the principles for which
he fought and died.
