Oscar Ramirez is a 17 year old Junior at Toppenish High School. Oscar is an all
around student and is on the honor roll. He is one of middle children of six children
of Gabriel and Aurora Ramirez of Toppenish, all who live at home and have one
son who is a Freshman at Central Washington University.
When you ask him what inspired him to do art work, he said his mother Aurora
was his initial inspiration. He said she always loved art and told her children there
was artistic talent in her family, so she encouraged all of their doing art work when
they were young. Both his parents were migrant farmworkers when they arrived in
Toppenish.
Today Oscar Ramirez has found his niche in art and he is being mentored by his art
teacher Laura Wise of Toppenish High School. "She is always encouraging and
pushing me to do more work build on my talents," said Oscar. "I am very fortunate
that she cares enough to help me buy art material when it is needed to enter
contests." This year Oscar is taking two classes from Ms.Wise and his interest has .
blossomed and he is seeing more of the potential that he has.

He entered his art work in the Allied Arts High School Students contest, even
though he did not win, his work caught the eye of the Cinco de Mayo Planning
committee: .
He wants to thank the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Cinco de Mayo
Committee for selecting his art work as the signature poster for the 2008 Cinco de
• Mayo Fiesta Grande in Downtown Yakima. Oscar's prize will be a $500 prize: He
will be signing his art work at the Cinco de Mayo in front of the millennium plaza
in downtown Yakima on May 3 & 4th
