City Manager • Asst. Mayor Kathy Coffey Randy Beehler, Comm. Relations Manager. • The meeting convened at 9:47 am .• • • Agenda, 1. Discussion re: proposed City of Yakima Social Media Policy . Community Relations Manager Randy Beehler discussed research that the Community Relations Division staff had been doing since having been directed by the City Council to explore the potential for using social media to enhance the City's communications efforts. That research included contacting other local, state, and federal governmental entities that have been utilizing social media and examining the best practices of each. Beehler explained that the research that has been done has resulted in the Community Relations Division developing a social media strategy that is cautious, yet allows the City to begin to benefit from this emerging method of information exchange and community building. • • Beehler explained that the Community Relations Division. has been informally using a. Twitter account for several months while also developing a Facebook page, but that advice from other governmental entities is that formal use of social media not begin until a Social Media Policy was in place. Mayor Cawley said that utilizing social media was identified by the City Council during its retreat earlier this year as something the City needed to seriously pursue. Asst. Mayor Coffey agreed that having the proposed Social Media Policy reviewed by the full Council was necessary before its implementation. Committee Action: Mayor Cawley made a motion that the proposed Social Media Policy be forwarded to the full City Council at its June 15 business meeting with a recommendation from the Council Rules and Procedures Committee that the City • Manager be directed to implement the policy as presented. Asst. Mayor Coffey seconded the motion. • Vote: 2 -0 in favor of the motion 2. Other business • • There was no other business brought before the committee.
