Council Members present: Maureen Adkison, Bill Lover
Staff: Michael Morales, Joan Davenport, Joe Caruso, Lare Watters
The Fire Department and Mill District updates did not occur.
Capital Projects — Lincoln Avenue Update: The traffic revision occurred the morning of
June 2 without a problem. A ground breaking will occur before the end of June.
Continuation of sidewalk sign discussion: Lare Watters distributed his research memo
regarding regulating content. Bill Lover suggested that the issue be forwarded to the full
Council on June 15. Maureen Adkison requested Mr. Wafters and Ms. Davenport talk to
David Edler about the content issue before it goes to Council. The Committee members
have talked to the downtown business organizations.
Political signs downtown: Mr. Lover suggested the city promote a voluntary effort to
discourage political signs from 1 Street to 9 Street / Chestnut to "A." Ms. Adkison agreed
that downtown should be off limits for this type of sign. Mr. Lover asked for an opinion from
Legal about the city leading the effort, even though it would be voluntary. It was suggested
that CDY (Committee for Downtown Yakima) be asked about taking the lead.
• Update from New Vision: Dave McFadden briefed the Committee on a couple of projects
and said they are seeing some recovery on the business development front. He will bring
monthly updates to the Committee. He hopes to introduce the new Greater Yakima
Chamber of Commerce President to the Committee at their July meeting.
Planning for capital facilities infrastructure presentation: Mr. Morales said staff is ready for
more direction from Council and mentioned the opportunity to target capital improvements to
support gang suppression efforts. Ms. Adkison said she would like Council to have details
of the various components; specifically what is mandated or regulated (which Council does
not have much control over), and what the options are for the rest of the facilities. That will
help Council align the capital facilities updates with strategic priorities. Mr. Morales said
ideas for specific improvement areas and the needs of those areas will be ready for the next
Committee meeting.
The next meeting of the Council Economic Development Committee is scheduled for
