Joan Davenport, Planning Manager DATE: June 10, 2010 Subject: Response to Walt Ranta Inquiry Regarding Barge- Chestnut Neighborhood Traffic Calming Public Hearing. At the June 1, 2010 City Council meeting Mr. Walt Ranta inquired about the date of a Public Hearing to review the proposed Traffic Calming Plan for the Barge - Chestnut Neighborhood. He indicated that he thought the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital (YVMH) project hearing was already scheduled. On May 28, 2010 the City of Yakima issued the notice of availability for the • Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) and Notice of Application for the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital Campus Expansion project. The mandatory public comment period for the DEIS will conclude June 28, 2010. All public and agency comments will be considered and a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) is expected to be issued in early August. A Public Hearing on the campus expansion project will be conducted by the Yakima Hearing Examiner, estimated to occur in September. . C The technical study conducted for the Traffic Calming, project in the neighborhood concluded that the City of Yakima should not install the proposed calming devices until the YVMH project moves forward with the "closed campus" phase of the expansion project. The technical study noted that the effectiveness of these devices will not be realized unless the "closed campus" portion of the YVMH project is implemented. Therefore, it is expected that City Council may schedule the public hearing to receive comments on the Barge Chestnut Traffic Calming Project in late August or early September, after the Final EIS for the YVMH project is issued.
