RE: Street Lighting on S. 80 Avenue — Nob Hill Road to Zier Road
Dear Mrs. Turner,
We appreciate you bringing your safety concerns about 80 Avenue to our attention. Installation
and maintenance of street lights within the city is an important part of the work we do for the
citizens of Yakima. Due to budget constraints our main focus is maintaining the approximately
4400 existing street lights. After paying for the cost of electricity, lamp replacements and repairs
we have only enough funding for about 6 new street lights each year. Those new lights are
normally installed in newly annexed areas without street lights.
In the 0.7 mile stretch of 80 Avenue between Nob Hill Rd and Zier Rd there are 7 street lights,
most are positioned at street intersections. Five of these lights were installed by city crews within
the last 3 years. Although the lighting level provided by these lights is not ideal, it is better than on
many roads in the immediate area. Our limited resources will not permit us to upgrade the lighting
on 80 Avenue in the foreseeable future.
One option residents in the area may wish to pursue is a Local Improvement District (LID) for
street lighting. This process allows the residents to fund improvements in their area and bypass
the city's budgetary and prioritization processes. Please contact the City of Yakima Engineering
Department at 575 -6111 if you are interested in implementing an LID.
Please call me at 576 -6340 if you have any questions.
Sincerely
Joseph Rosenlund, PE
