Mr.Archie M. Matthews, OND Manager
Neighborhood Development Services
112 S. 8th Street
Yakima,WA 98901
Dear Mr. Matthews,
I Recently received home maintenance assistance from the City of Yakima.I am a senior citizen
and homeowner in Yakima. In this last year I lost my former husband and companion of many
years(to COVID)who helped me with most of the maintenance and repair problems
encountered with this 100+year old home. You would never guess it to look at it that it was
built in 1901! I am the 3rd proud owner.
As I age, I have wondered how was I going to keep up with it? I needed grab bars in my
bath/shower but felt completely out of my element to do the work. Not to mention the cost
and finding someone to do such a small job. I wondered if Yakima had any help for senior
citizens. (I did a search on my smart phone and called the number that came up. I had little
hope that there would be any positive result as I had attempted, in the past,to locate such
help. I just never had used the 'right'words).
It is difficult for me to describe the joy and gratitude I feel at what then transpired. Grab bars
were considered a safety must for seniors of my 73 years. The response time from call to
application to approval to work start was lightening fast! In the process of the City's initial
inspection of my home, some questions were asked of me and some more'investigation'. An
updated electric panel but very old gas furnace was followed by another request for approval of
a new HVAC system! This is the stuff of dreams! An approval came.
Within one week, the grab bars were placed, and a new HVAC system was installed.
The workmen were courteous, efficient, and fast. The work was of high quality with no mess
left behind. I was so amazed by it all.
I am at a loss for words to convey, really,my amazement at Yakima's support of us in an ageing
community trying to hang on to and maintain our homes.
THANK YOU!!!
Sincerely, - ' X —
