For Meeting of: September 22, 2015 Downtown Plaza Case Study Session Sean Hawkins, Economic Development Manager, 575-6274 The Yakima City Council will hear from two similar sized communities on how the development of public plaza spaces in their downtown districts have effected the economies of their community The two communities that will present are Missoula, MT and Rapid City, SD. Missoula, MT (population 69,000) - Linda McCarthy, director of the Downtown Missoula Partnership, and Ellen Buchanon, director of the Missoula Redevelopment Agency will speak on the success of Caras Park. Caras Park hosts numerous events throughout the year, and in 2013 nearly 1,000,000 people visited the park. Ellen and Linda will join us via a Skype Conference. Rapid City, SD (population 68,000) - Dan Senftner, President and CEO of Destination Rapid City, will present the story of Main Street Square. Main Street Square opened in 2011 and in its third year received 700,000 visitors and hosted 200 events. Dan, as a business owner and property owner in downtown Rapid City, will tell the story of how the community took the steps to build Main Street Square and the economic results since it opened.
