YAKIMA CITY COUNCIL
SPECIAL MEETING
August 29, 2022

4:30 -5 PM Meet and greet social; 5 -6:30 PM Joint meeting with Yakima School District
Board —conducted in person
1. Roll Call
Present: Mayor Janice Deccio, presiding, Councilmembers Matt Brown, Patricia Byers, Holly
Cousens, Danny Herrera and Eliana Macias were present along with City Manager Robert Harrison
and City Clerk Sonya Claar Tee. Assistant Mayor Soneya Lund was absent and excused.
Yakima School District President of the Board Martha Rice, Board Member Norm Walker and Board
Member Ryan Beckett were present along with Superintendent Dr. Trevor Greene.
2. Pledge of Allegiance
Davis High School Class President Alexa Guzman led the Pledge of Allegiance.
3. Yakima Youth Leadership Program (YYLP) Report
City Attorney Sara Watkins introduced the Yakima Youth Leadership Program. Deniele Fleming,
Education Advocate ESD 105, discussed the curriculum, and researchers Juliana Van Olphen of
San Francisco State University, and Nancy Carmona of the University of Washington, presented their
findings after two full school years of programming and data collection. Emily Nelson of ESD
105 discussed where the program goes when the grant period ends on September 30, 2022.
4. Handle with Care Presentation
Yakima Police Lt. Chad Janis and Director of Safety& Security Sara Cordova with the Yakima
School District shared a presentation on Handle with Care. Dr. Greene commented that this is a
phenomenal example of a sustainable partnership between the City of Yakima and Yakima School
District.
5. Public Comment(allow up to 15 minutes)
Tony Courcy, City resident, spoke on several topics.
6. Adjournment
MOTION: Cousens moved and Byers seconded to adjourn to the next City Council regular
meeting on September 6, 2022, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers. The motion carried by
unanimous vote, Lund absent. The meeting adjourned at 6:21 p.m.
