WHIE AS, President Lyndon 13. Johnson established'Jfispanic 7feritage Week'
in 1968; and
`WJLEfS, President 1&,ona&l&eagan expanded the celebration in 1988 to cover
a month-Gong period from September 15th through October 15th and declared it to be
'NationaC9-[ispanic 7feritage Yvianth;• and
WW!EUAS, during 'NationaCxispanic 7feritage 5Y[onth"the contributions made
by and the important presence of xispanics and Latinos in the 'United States and their
heritage and culture are honored,. and
WHIE AS, Wispanics and Latinos have had a profound and positive influence
on our country, including the Yakima Valley; and
WHIE JS, the significant and impactfuC contributions xispanics and Latinos
have made to the Yakima Valley's economy have enabled our region's diversified
industries to grow andprosper, and
WWX!E J4S, the 'United States has a Cong and storied history of weCcoming
immigrants, which has given it a significant advantage over the rest of the world,• and
`WJfrERTAS, 55 million Americans, or about 17% of the country s total
population, and about 50% of Yakima County's total population, are of xispanic or
Latino origin.
WOW, TREflcFOf, I, Janice cDeccio, SYLayor of the City of Yakima, and on
behalf of the Yakima City Council, do hereby proclaim September 15th through October
15th as
Jfispanic 5(Stage Month
in the City of'Yakima, and urge everyone to [earn about, acknowledge, and applaud the
generations of xispanics and Latinos who have enriched our community and those that
will continue to build a bright and hopeful-future for themselves, their families, and aCC
of us who call-the Yakima Valley home.
