S UM M ARY E X P L ANAT I O N:
I n J uly of 2020, a fundraising effort was started by a group of Yakima northeast business owners,
parents, coaches, community leaders and basketball players to make much needed
improvements to Miller P ark.
The group reached out to City officials and an initial meeting was held at Miller P ark on Tuesday,
J uly 21, 2020 to identify their ideas for improving the park. A follow up meeting was then held on
J uly 28, 2020 at P ublic Works with the community members, Mayor B yers, Council Member
Macias and staff. A purpose statement was created by the attending group; “Revitalizing M iller
P ark as the Heart of the Community”. A list of improvements was then created by the group
and ranked by priority. T he improvements determined to be conducted at Miller P ark consisted
of:
• Resurface and restripe basketball courts 1-3
• Remove and replace basketball court 4
• L ights for basketball courts
• B asketball court perimeter fence replacement
• B asketball rims, backboards and poles for all four courts
• New restroom
• S econd picnic shelter
• New playground
• Added walkways
• Additional picnic tables and benches
• S hade structure performance area
Follow up meetings were held in which cost estimates were developed and shared with the
group. Three of the community members presented their ideas to the P arks & Recreation
Commission on Wednesday, A ugust 12, 2020. The Park & Recreation Commission was grateful
to the group and supported their efforts. Nicole Donegan from the F ield Group then donated her
time in creating an informational and fundraising brochure for the proposed park improvements.

Fundraising efforts were started with the City soon receiving both private donations as well as
grants from Walmart, Del Monte and G E S A Credit Union. I n addition, a Washington State
L egislative Capital B udget request was submitted and received by the City in the amount of
$625,000.
The progress that has been made to date on the project includes the City’s S treets Division
removing basketball court 4 and repaved it followed by crack sealing and re-coating courts 1-3.
A ll four courts were then restriped. I n addition, the basketball rims and backboards have been
replaced. T he picnic shelter project has begun. The prefabricated concrete restroom has been
ordered and the utility work is going out for bid soon. T he new playground has been installed and
has already been enjoyed by many children and families. T he shade structure for the
performance area has been ordered and the footers will be dug soon. T he lighting for the
basketball courts has also started and should be completed in late J une. W ith the improvements
being made to Miller P ark, the Millennium Foundation is funding a mosaic project to add beautiful
artwork throughout the park.
The Yakima P arks & Recreation Division is pleased to be working with a group of energetic and
motivated community members that want to make improvements to a Yakima Park.

Alicia Garza spoke with Mayor Byers regarding starting a fund raising effort to make improvements
to Miller Park. Meeting at Miller Park was held on Tuesday, July 21, 2020. A group of Northeast
business owners, parents, coaches, community leaders and basketball players met with staff at the
park to identify their ideas for improving the park. An initial meeting was held on July 28, 2020 with
the community members, Mayor Byers, Council Member Macias and staff.
August 2020
