HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts Commission - Notes - NO QUOROM 032019 (2)TakimaArts Commission Wednesday, March 20, 2019 City Hall — Second Floor Conference Room 3:30 p.m. Meeting Notes Members: Noel Moxley, Johnathan Heath Lambe, Melissa Labberton, David Rogers, David Lynx City Staff: Rosalinda Ibarra Chair Noel Moxley convened the meeting at 3:37pm. Due to lack of a quorum, the September 19, 2018 meeting minutes were not approved. Review 11/14/18 notes: Additions to the November meeting notes were noted. Budget Report: Moxley indicated the operating budget for the Arts Commission is $10,000. In 2018, most of the expenses went to the Utility Box Wrap and Windows Alive projects. There's currently a remaining balance of $8,139.11. Windows Alive Update: Moxley shared artist renderings selected for the spring session of Windows Alive displays. She also shared a newspaper article that mentioned the project. The spring opening is Friday April 5t" at the Hotel Maison at 5:00 pm. Commission vacancies: Three position vacancies exist; one is an Agency Rep for the Seasons, another is a Community Rep position, and an Artist position. Applications are available online and at the Clerk's office. Johnathan Lambe suggested they review the Charter rules to consider expanding the role and purpose of the Arts Commission. Utility Box Wrap Project update: David Lynx noted that Deborah Ann's piece needs to be re -photographed to better fit the utility box for a second spot. The Commission discussed several other artist pieces and concurred that putting out an open call may gather more interest to fulfill a third spot. In the meantime, David Rogers was asked to review the "Pollinators" exhibit to see whether one of those pieces will work. Washington State Creative District update: Lambe provided an extensive update about his participation and experience attending the workshop. After further discussion, the Commission agreed that the next step is to form a sub -committee to setup the framework and vision for the program. They suggested including John Cooper and Lambe will recruit two other members to form the sub -committee. Lambe also shared that he has taken on a new role with the Yakima Valley Museum, replacing Andy Granitto. He envisioned Susan Duffin to continue representing the Museum on the Arts Commission and he would like to transition from his Artist position into a representative for Maker Space once his position expires. 1 A plan for the future: Moxley has not received a response about meeting with City Council members to discuss what the City's direction is for the Arts Commission. Her next strategy is to contact Councilmember Jason White. Yakima Farmer's Market: The Commission expressed interest in participating in the Yakima Farmer's Market this year. They discussed ideas on how to involve the community such as providing an information booth, kids activities, on -site artist booth. Lynx will confirm their participation with the Farmer's Market which opens May 12th and continues through October. Group Updates: the members shared events happening at their respective agencies. - Yakima Symphony Orchestra — Rogers distributed the newly released 2019-2020 brochure entitled "One Thousand and One Nights" - Warehouse Theatre — Labberton shared that the theater had a successful first season in their new building. The "Beehive" performance opens on May 3rd - Larson Gallery — an opening featuring part of the Pollinators exhibit at Gilbert Cellars on March 21st beginning at 5:OOp.m. He also shared that the Gala event is taking place on March 30tn - Maker Space —the gallery will be re -opening sometime in spring. - Yakima Valley Museum — the museum will be featuring "Not Forgotten" which is a celebration of recent museum acquisitions. That will open on April 12th and continue into September. This meeting closed at 4:25 p.m. The next meeting of the Yakima Arts Commission will be June 19, 2019, at 3:30 p.m. in the 2nd Floor Conference Room on the second floor at City Hall. K
