The Minutes from the June 19, 2019 meeting were reviewed and a motion was put forth
by Teresa Pritchard to accept the minutes, with Jack McEntire seconding. The minutes
were unanimously voted to be accepted.
Budget: Randy Bonds Jr. presented a report from the City Finance department on the
current expenditures in the Arts Commission budget. There is $4,434.68 remaining in the
budget. After the fall Windows Alive project, it's projected that there will be -$600
remaining. This will be reviewed at the October meeting. It was suggested that the
remainder go to Windows Alive to fund supplies for the project. The City Legal department
questions the appropriateness of the $600 voted in the previous meeting to help with the
Drag Me Out to the Arts program. Heath and Randy with follow up with City Legal.
Windows Alive: 6 artists were chosen for the Fall show. They are: Jeremy Dubow,
Kelly McKnight, Joan Neubauer, Jeremy Bartheld, Maria Rueda, and Janice La Verne
Baker. There were also 4 potential artists for the Spring 2020 show.
Cheryl Hahn: Cheryl gave a presentation on Women's Empowerment Through the Arts.
She mentioned there will be exhibits around the valley commemorating the 100th
anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment. She asked that the Arts Commission
gear the Spring 2020 Windows Alive show to that. The commission voted to gear the
Spring show in that direction.
Utility Box Wrap Project: David Lynx confirmed that a new box has been placed on North
1st Street near the mission. An additional box is being prepared for 16th and Lincoln.
Regarding plaques for the boxes, he will continue to work to get them on all boxes. Heath
mentioned we need to prepare to begin replacing art on boxes that are fading. Randy will
ask Public Works for a cost of replacement so that we can plan ahead.
Kennewick Power Boxes: The city of Kennewick pays artists ($450) to submit art for their
power boxes. It was discussed that maybe we should work with local schools to get more
art for the boxes. It was suggested that if we do begin paying artists for boxes, we should
pay the artists whose art is already on the boxes. At this point, we do not have the budget.
Painted Piano: All the pianos have been received and the artists are beginning to paint
the pianos. It was asked that Nathaniel Hull from the Rotary would attend our November
meeting to give an update.
Washington State Creative District: Heath let the commission know that he had presented
a proposal to the Economic Development Committee. There is a cost of $20,000 required
to begin a creative district. At this point, the council stepped back from funding. The
commission is looking for other ways to try and fund the project. There was also
discussion on spinning up a separate non-profit to head this effort.
Group Updates: The museum is having a Holiday Lights extravaganza where non -profits
will decorate trees. There is a competition where museum goers can vote and proceeds
will go to the non-profit. On October 24t", the museum will have their Red into Black event.
The Capitol Theatre is starting their season. The Symphony season has started. The
Larson gallery has some new exhibits including the celebration of Women in Arts.
Additional Business: It was brought up that we should collaborate with the Ellensburg Arts
Commission.
The next meeting of the Yakima Arts Commission will be November 20t", at 3:30 p.m. in
the Second Floor Conference Room on the second floor at City Hall.
