Dear Folks:
In my hand is the study you made of proposed locations for an YAKIMA AQUATIC CENTER. I am sure that your
decision to shelve this study until we have better times was well intentioned but there is poverty and depressed
times everywhere but not always at the same time. Our children are looking forward to having a water feature
with all the "bells and whistles" and I
believe it is in our best interests to take the study down and by donations of our citizens, begin the process of
accumulating funds to build one similar to the one at Moses Lake! It is my opinion that you folks will not want to
institute a tax a year from now so let's get busy with donations until you are ready to do grants and other ways to
fund the YAKIMA AQUATIC CENTER.
I am prepared to take on the responsibility of this campaign, now that the Public Works Department has set up a
fund to receive donations. The $1,000 I gave is there plus another $1,000 I gave the city about a year ago to
purchase the little park across from the Larson Building. This never happened. We have also had some cans of
money arrive and now we have over $2100 in donations for the YAKIMA AQUATIC CENTER. That's a nice start.
Since 2007 we had a very active group who researched and made this study in their leisure time. I salute these
men and women and plan to immediately launch a campaign to make this study come true.
Here are the people I salute! DAVE EDLER, NEIL MC CLURE, MICAH CAWLEY, KATHY COFFEY, MIKE
LEITA, DENISE
NICHOLS, LYNN QUESENBURY, AND TAMI ANDRINGA..
I will be attending future council meetings with an update of the city finance department fund set up for the
YAKIMA AQUATIC CENTER plus reading some of the letters we may get from former residents who learned to
swim at Washington and /or Miller pools in the 1950's and 1960's. We can write to our children, now adults, to ask
if they wished to donate in honor of the City of Yakima free swimming lesson program that led to life guard cards.
They might also thank we parents who took them to the parks for competition of swim teams from Lions, Franklin,
Washington and Miller pools. I met a lot of parents who were very supportive of the city and not all of us lived in
the city! Maybe we will recognize each other after so many years since we were active.
This evening I am concentrating on whom to make the donations. Mail: City of Yakima Finance Department,
129 North Second Street, Yakima, WA ATTENTION: Yakima Aquatic Center, Donation Fund.
Or take the donation when you pay your city water bill or for your wastewater bill and stop to make a donation at
that time.
Plan to take this form and copy it and give a copy to each secretary of clubs or organizations to which you
belong. That will be your only expense. This is a "do it yourself' campaign and though I have never heard of this
kind of campaign, I believe we can all realize that a few dollars donation from each of us is better than a tax.
