P1ROCLA.VLA tIOW WJ EREAS, adequate housing is essential -for healthy families and communities; and WJ EREAS, winter poses extreme hardship for the 18,000 homeless counted this year in Washington State and nearly 800 inadequately housed Cow -income men, women, and children in Yakima County; and WJFEREAS, we recognize through coordinated efforts of focal service providers and community volunteers, the number of unsheltered homeless individuals has been reduced by 82%, and overall homelessness has been reduced by 55% in the past 9 years; and ` t'7L EAS, in remembering the NINE people known to have died in 'Yakima this year without homes, and those unknown to us in name who have died earlier than they should because of experiencing homelessness in their fives; and WJFEREAS, December 2P has been designated National.7-Comefess Persons' 34emoriafDay by the National Coalition for the 9-fomefess and the National- Wealth Care for the .71-omefess Council and is so recognized by cities nationwide; and WJFEREAS, in this season of generosity and sharing, citizens of Yakima are encouraged to commit themselves to promoting compassion and concern forall- brothers and sisters, especially those who are poor and homeless; and WJ EREAS, in remembering those who have died on the streets, the cause of ending homelessness is kept urgent, as is the community's collective commitment to preventing such deaths in the future. NOON, `L fEREEORfE, I Micah Cawley, U'tayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim December21, 2014, as "Jfomeless Persons' fvlemoriallDay" in the City of Yakima in recognition of the people who have died without a home, from ailments or conditions directly related to homelessness, I hereby askaCCcitizens to take a moment of silence in remembrance and encourage our citizens to support all- focal- efforts to eliminate homelessness in our community.
