I understand the need for shelters but I question the location. There are many small children that walk to and from school in this vicinity and older children catch the bus in front of the shelter to get to school. There are usually many men in front, back and walking down the streets at all times. The other morning I was driving and I was fortunate enough to witness a gentleman urinating in the bushes,. Seriously? They have no where to go in the daytime so they hang out around the neighborhood. I am a homeowner and operate a small childcare in the area and I am afraid to leave 'my older grandchildren home without an adult and I am afraid for the younger children to play outside unless they are in my eyesight at all times. It is my understanding that some of these homeless people a! re sex offenders. What are my rights? We were not given a choice nor notified until I read it in the paper. I feel a better place would be in an industrial zone where there wouldn't be as many families and children involved. It is bad enough to live across the street from people who use and sell drugs and have extra people living with them all the time. I have complained many times to the police but to no avail. There landlord doesn't care as long as he gets his rent and I believe that they are section 8 units ,so guess what ,we the taxpayers get to pay for that to. Not only do I get to live in the middle of all this I also get to go to work everyday to pay my taxes so I can support people who can't or won't get a job. It is about time we clean up Yakima. As I said I understand the need for a shelter but you need to see that it gets moved to a more appropriate place for the safety of our neighborhood. Madeline Ermey, 34 Avenue, jayshine75(.gmail.com Hell i work at detox so i know tje ways of our homeless citizens. you council members stink! we are electing others next go around. Yakima needs new shelters period! John Mifsud, 510 - 842 -8586, john(anextstephousinq.com - I want to let the City Council know that I believe it is the responsibility of the City of Yakima to house their homeless. The homeless of Yakima are predominantly from Yakima. They are citizens of Yakima who need our help. To put a moratorium on filling the gap of unmet needs seems harsh especially when winter is upon us. Please reconsider and find a compassion solution that benefits those who need our help the most. Anna Green, alg98100a,gmail.com As a Yakima resident and a participating community member, I am extremely disappointed in the recent moratorium of homeless shelters. Sheltering our most vulnerable community members (especially during the cold seasons we have recently been introduced to again) is telling of a community's strongest values. When moratoriums are in place, they make me think tht we are a community of NIMBY ( "Not in My Backyard ") and not looking forward to the future of our town. Obviously the answer is not simple, but you should personally look into the eyes of those unsheltered this winter and future seasons and tell them YOU are sorry that YOU could not make it possible for them to live a more dignified, healthier life.
