WieEREAS, Work [AIDS Day began on December 1, 1998 with the goal of raising
money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice, and improving education about .7-17VAIDS; and
WieEREAS, World -AIDS Day continues to be an important way to celebrate the
extraordinary advances we have made in the battle against .71 -It andAIDS, and to remind Yakima
residents and people everywhere that .71-1-V has not gone away and that much more has yet to be done;
and
` t'7IEREAS, globally, more than 22 million people have diedfrom AIDS, and more than 33
million people are living with .7I7W Though the death rate from this disease is slowly declining,
millions have diedfrom this disease and millions more are still at risk and
` t'7IEREAS, every 9.5 minutes someone in the v.S. is infected with .717V• and
WieEREAS, Washington has over 11,500 to 12, 700 people infected with .71-1-V and an
estimated 200,000 Washington's are .71-1-Vpositive and are unaware of their status; and
WMEREAS, women and children around the world are particularly vulnerable due to
gender inequalities, gaps in access to services and increases in sexual violence; and
WMEREAS, expanded access to .71-1-V testing, diagnosis and treatment can help reduce
the suffering from this entirely preventable disease; and
WieEREAS, the theme forWorldAIDS Day 2014, "Getting to Zero" reminds us that
we are striving for zero new .7-fl(infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS related deaths.
NOW, `L IEREEO1 , I, Micah Fawley, UYtayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf
of the City Council, do hereby proclaim December 1, 2014 as
"WorldAI1DS Day"
in the City of Yakima and urge all citizens to take part in activities and observances designed to
increase awareness and understanding of rlfH2/AIDS as a global challenge, to take part in
.71712/AIDS prevention activities and programs, and to join the global effort to prevent the further
spread of .717/AIDS.
