Public Comments
RE: Agenda Item #7: Selection of Preferred Downtown Plaza Design for Final Refinement by
Gustafson, Guthie, Nichol
City Council Members:
I have had the opportunity to participate in two of the three public meetings on the Downtown Plaza,
and I have been very impressed with the thought and careful consideration put into the plaza designs
presented by Ms. Gustafson and her partners.
It is exiting to hear someone with her scope of experience talk about the creation of a public space, tied
to the people and geography of the area, and to hear the range of creative options, solutions, and
compromises that allow for the development of a multi -use space that also addresses concerns about
parking and access.
As in many situations, what first looks like a choice between parking OR plaza, turns out to be a false
choice. With creativity, careful though, and expert advice you can create the option to have both
parking AND plaza. And do it in a way that provides Yakima an amazing opportunity to have a unique
community space that can promote tourism, build community, nd spur economic development.
The North Plaza design feels to me like a failed compromise that has too many limits and too many
corners cut to shoehorn a plaza into that limited space. It really falls short on the promise of what a vital
community plaza could and should be.
Frankly, I'd be happy with any of the 4 designs for the South Plaza. However, I think the two "Y" designs
are more aesthetically interesting as public spaces, and they allow for greater flexibility for hosting a
variety of events and community gatherings.
Being a leader means looking further than just around the next corner. It means envisioning what we
want our community to look and feel like 10, 15, 20 years down the road. You are being presented
today with a unique and exciting opportunity to exercise your leadership as Yakima's elected leaders.
I ask you tonight to consider your options and choices carefully and, as our elected leaders, I urge to
seize this opportunity and Think Big and Act Bold to help shape the future of Yakima for many years to
come.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts with you.
