WJPEREAS, countless families in the 'United States live with prostate cancer which is
the most commonly diagnosed non -skin cancer and the second most common cause of cancer -related
deaths among mares in the 'United States; and
`G1'JiER,EAS, in 2013, the National Cancer Institute estimated that nearly 240,000 men
will- 6e diagnosed with and more than 29,000 men will die of prostate cancer; and
` ifERSEAS, appro4mately every 14 seconds, a male in the 'United States turns 50
years old and increases his odds of developing cancer, including prostate cancer, and
ZI'JiER,EAS, African-American mares suffer from a prostate cancer incidence rate that is
up to 65 percent higher than white mares and have dou6le the prostate cancer mortality rate of
white mares; and
WVEREAS, there are no noticea6le symptoms of prostate cancer while it is in the early
stage, and therefore, proper screening is critical -in order to increase chances of survival: and
WJPEREAS, ongoing research promises further improvements in prostate cancer
prevention, early detection, and treatment,

in the City of Yakima, and urge all men in our community and throughout the country to become
aware of their own risks of prostate cancer, talk to their health care providers about prostate
cancer, and, whenever appropriate, get screened for the disease.
