RE: Regulation of Billboards
To the Yakima City Council,
Yakima is a beautiful place and we believe it is to all of our benefit to make sure that it stays that way. That includes
addressing issues that detract from our surroundings. As members of the professional design community, we are
keenly aware of how critical the built environment is in representing the local quality of life. With that in mind, we
would like to encourage the City Council to continue to discuss the appearance of our town, and in particular, the
impact of billboards.
In recent years, significant efforts have been made to revitalize Yakima. The downtown has seen sidewalk, lighting and
planting improvements. Businesses such as the Capital Theatre and Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences
have invested in large construction projects. The wine industry has been drawing tourism to our area. Now, exciting
ideas such as the downtown plaza, an aquatics center, and development of the Boise Cascade site have been added to
the table. The people in Yakima have been working hard and investing in our community and have made it perfectly
clear that economic development, community pride, and a high regard for the quality of the infrastructure and built
environment go hand in hand.
Due to all of the hard work and the character of our surroundings, Yakima is positioned in direct competition with
other beautiful cities. In Walla Walla and Napa, the wine industry literally pours investment into production facilities,
tasting rooms, accommodations, and events to attract both out of town and local visitors. Both cities have also placed
tight restrictions on billboards. To be competitive, Yakima must show a dedication to the design decisions that create
an attractive inviting city. Unfortunately, billboards are creating visual chaos and having a negative impact on the
appearance of our town. On top of that, independent research has shown that billboards drive down neighboring
property values and discourage economic activity. As a result, nearly 90% of Washington cities are now prohibiting new
billboards and are working to phase out those that exist. Yakima should follow suit.
Please continue the great work the Yakima Planning Department has begun and reconsider the regulation of billboards.
Thank you for taking it into consideration.

Yakima Convention Center
The Rotary District 5060 Conference is HISTORY. Only to return in 2016. This one was nearly
flawless, in great part due to the unfailing skill and attention of each of you. Really.
I don't think much actually could have gone awry because someone with experience was
ALWAYS available- from Lisa and Diane and Connie for the Facilities and food service, to Sam
and his crew for the meetings. We had microphones, banners hung and taken down. Extra
coffee on Sunday.
Best of all you made those of us "working it"- feel protected and cared for. I have to say, it
might be hard to go back to having to do much of this on my own.
So thank you.
When you live here, you don't often have the opportunity to experience how well the Yakima
Convention Center runs on the inside. That's too bad, because it is a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE.
Thank you all.
