ZLif?E12EAS, aft citizens regardless of race, creed or ethnicity deserve to be treated with
dignity, respect, compassion, and justice; and
Wi-PEREAS, each act of racism or discrimination is one too many; and
T3f?EREAS, racism can take many different forms, including but not limited to
discrimination; personal attacks, including violence; written or verbal threats or insults; and
damage to property, including graffiti; and
W7LE2EAS, racism and discrimination hurts everyone; and
Wi-PEREAS, because racism hurts everyone, 'YWCAs across the nation have taken a
stand against racism to raise peoples' consciousness that racism stiffexists in many forms; and
Wi-PEREAS, the elimination of racism can only be achieved through the participation
of alt citizens in dialogue, reflection, and action; and
W7f?EREAS, our shared goat is to advocate for increased awareness of the fasting and
negative effects of racism in our communities, institutions, and personal relationships; and
Wi-f?EREAS, the persistence and pervasiveness of racism divides our community and
keeps individualsfrom achieving success in education, economics, employment, and quality of
life.
NOW, `ZJfERETORE, in recognition of the impact that racism has on the health and
weft -being of our community, 1, Micah Cawley, Mayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf
of the City Council, do hereby proclaim 'Friday, Aprif25, 2014 as
"VCA - STAND AGAINST MCzSM DAT"
in the City of Yakima and encourage aft citizens to work towards building racial- equity
throughout the community.
