` t'7IE12rE.AS, reading is an important activity for all of the residents of the City of
Yakima; and
` t'7IER,EAS, literary reading in America is declining among all age groups; and
PY'3IEREAS, the Big Head is a national program by the National for the Arts
andArts 3Y1idwest that encourages literary reading by asking communities to come together and read
and discuss one book and
`G1fEAS, `Yakima Regional Library was awardeda Big Read grant to promote
reading; and
WigEREAS, reading is one way to create bonds within a family and among friends and
neighbors and with the Big Head we want to get everyone in a community to read and discuss a great
booktogether and
WigEREAS, the Big Read aims to revive literary reading in America; therefore, in support of
this goal, there will be bookdiscussions, dramatic presentations, movie viewings and other programs
held throughout the City of Yakima.
NOON E FO RrE, I Micah Cawley, U'tayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf of the
City Council, do hereby support learning through reading and proclaim October 2013 as
"2 EE BIG READ (Y)4KIJVIA. 9140.9V 7 f"
and encourage all the city residents, both young and old, to read.
