Michael Morales Interim City Manager FROM: Wayne Wantland Communications & Technology Manager RE Public Safety Communications Equipment Needs Radio Console. The Motorola radio console in the communications center is the heart of radio communications for public safety. The current system has been in place since 1996 with one upgrade during the intervening years. It is critical that we keep this component of the communications systems at a top level of performance, ensuring minimal risk of failure and service disruptions The replace cost for this system is approximately $400,000. •r The second most critical system for the police department is the mobile computer and video camera system. These systems have become a critical asset allowing the officers to be more efficient and safe when working in the field. Both the computers and the camera systems are well beyond their expected life and we are experiencing many catastrophic, irreparable failure. We have a fleet of approximately 40 of these units in patrol units and need to start replacing them in a continual, sustained program. The units currently being purchased are a combined unit that incorporates the camera system as well as the computer. In 2012 budget we were able to purchase 10 units but that has not caught us up over the failure rate we are experiencing so we are proposed replacing an additional ten units at an approximate cost of $100,000 This will ensure we can keep the units on the road functioning, avowing for a planned, budgeted replacement program for the remainder and sustainability into the future
