For Meeting of: 9/3/2013 ITEM TITLE: Resolution declaring meter lids surplus and authorizing disposal of these items in a manner most beneficial to the City of Yakima, by recycling them with Pacific Steel and Recycling saving the City the cost of disposal. SUBMITTED BY: David Brown, Water /Irrigation Manager Sue Ownby, Purchasing Manager SUMMARY EXPLANATION: Part of the Automated Meter Reading Project is to replace meter tile lids that have a seven inch opening with a ten inch opening, which makes the old seven inch opening lids obsolete. The current state contract recycling vendor has indicated they can not pick the lids up due to the lack of drivers. Pacific Steel and Recycling has agreed to pick the lids up and pay the going price for cast iron. R -2013- A RESOLUTION declaring cast iron water meter lids surplus to the needs of the City of Yakima, and authorizing the City Manager to dispose of these items in a manner most beneficial to the City of Yakima, by recycling them with Pacific Steel and Recycling saving the City the cost of disposal. WHEREAS, the City of Yakima (City) owns cast iron lids for which the City has no immediate or foreseeable use and which are surplus to the needs of the City; and WHEREAS, the original manufacturer does not want to buy the items back; and WHEREAS, the state contracted vendor for recycled metals cannot accommodate the City in picking up the surplus, due to their shortage of drivers and being located on the west side of the state; and WHEREAS, Pacific Steel and Recycling, a local business that already recycles used obsolete equipment for the City, has agreed to recycle said property and pay the City $0.1375 a pound, which is the going rate, per, now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA: The City Council hereby declares the aforementioned cast iron lids to be surplus to the needs of the City of Yakima and the City Manager is hereby authorized to recycle the lids with Pacific Steel and Recycling.
