As part of its activities, the committee receives regular updates from City staff, as well as the City's contracted lobbyists in Olympia and Washington, D.C., regarding the Council's state and federal legislative and administrative priorities, interacts with state and federal elected and appointed officials, and makes periodic trips to Olympia and Washington, D.C. to advocate for the Council's state and federal legislative and administrative priorities. Currently Mayor Cawley, Asst. Mayor Adkison, and Council Member Ettl serve on the Partnerships Committee. For the past year, Council Member Coffey has served on the Association of Washington Cities ( "AWC ") Legislative Committee and chaired an AWC Legislative Subcommittee (Healthy & Safe Communities Subcommittee). Council Member Coffey's service on the AWC Legislative Committee and her chairing of an AWC Legislative Subcommittee have helped to elevate the City's profile and level of participation in the crafting of legislative strategy that affect cities statewide. Council Member Coffey is expected to continue to serve in similar capacities over the next year. The City's Olympia lobbyist, Jim Justin, has recommended that the City's effectiveness at advocating for its state legislative and administrative priorities could be enhanced were Council Member Coffey appointed to the Council Partnerships Committee. As a member of the Council Partnerships Committee, Council Member Coffey would be in a strong position to interact with the committee, the full Yakima City Council, and the AWC Legislative Committee and share information between those entities. Council Member Ettl has proven to be an effective advocate for the City's state and federal legislative and administrative priorities during recent trips to Olympia and Washington, D.C. He would like to continue to fulfill that role, and would be well situated to do so as the alternate to the Council Partnerships Committee. The Council is, therefore, being asked to consider appointing Council Member Coffey to the Council Partnerships Committee and to appoint Council Member Ettl as alternate to the committee. Please let me know if you have any questions about this issue or if you need any additional information from me prior to the Council's August 6th regular business meeting.
