wirm ES, mental health is essential to everyone's health and well-being• and
tWflEI S S approximately one-1 alf of clronic mental illnesses begin by tfle age of 14, tflree-
quarters by age 24, and one in five adults experience a mental health problem in any given year and,
tWflERE S, suicide is tfle leading cause of death in tfle 'United States and tfie 2ns leading
cause among young adults -90%of people who die by suicide have an underlying mental illness; and
tWFERE S, long delays -sometimes decades -often occur between tfie time symptoms first
appear and wfien individuals get help; and
WiFEREAS early identification and treatment can make a difference in successful
management ofinentalillness and recovery; and
WiFEREAS it is important to maintain mental health and learn tfie symptoms of mental
illness in order to get help wfien it is needed, and
tWFERE S, every citizen and community can make a difference in fie(ping end the silence
and stigma that for too long have surrounded mental illness and discouraged people from getting help;
and
WI EREAS,public education and civic activities can encourage mental health and help
improve tfie lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness,
