ITEM BUDGETED: STRATEGIC PRIORITY: APPROVED FOR SUBMITTAL BY THE CITY MANAGER RECOMMENDATION: ATTACHMENTS: Description Upload Date Type Fc� ter r and instep re rr�c�r�th 4/ 7/ 0 1 a r Merr�0 2 CITY.OW YAlIMA PRO CLAMATI0JV W./(E*EAs, the family,serving as the primary source of Cave,identity, self-esteem and support,is the very foundation of our community; and 'WJ[+E*EAS, there are famines struggling with providing care fir their children andneed support; and 'WJ[+EREAS,sadly there are children who come into the care of the State of Washington Department of Children, Youth, andcFamilies every day fir reasons such as abandonment, death of parents, abuse andneglect and-other traumatic fife experiences,' and WXE4fEf1S,in the State of Washington more than 10,000 children andyouth on average are placedin fister care annually;and the demand persists for more foster and kinship famines to provide caring and supportive homes during difficult periods in the lives of kids and their famines; and WfEREAS, children andyouth in foster andkns1tip care range in age from infant to 21 years old and these children often have unique medical,psychological, or physical needs; and WXEREfS,foster care andknship providers give these children a safe environment where patience, kindness, and-caring can be experienced, and learnedandwhere each child's life can change fir the better, andwhere parents accept as part of their reward the opportunity to see their children develop,grow, and become a viable part of the community with a stronger self-image; and WJCEITEAS, a network of foster and kinship famines is a fundamental part of proarfing constant nurturing and support to children andfamines who need time to heal-and-put their lives backtogether, and W/CE4(Ef1S, the goalis to reunify these children and teens with their biological-famines; and WJCEITEAS,if these children and teens are not reunitedwith their parents, these same foster and kinship famines will often become an adoptive home or permanent placement for these children,resulting in agreater needfor more foster families, and W/CE4(Ef1S, each day professionals in private,public, and tribal agencies come together to support kids and- famines;working diligently to ensure safe and-loving homes for children; andworktogether to support kids andfamines with the resources, support, andwarmth they need and deserve; and WJCEITEAS, community members are encouraged to demonstrate their respect andgratitude for foster and On ship families who un selfish&&share their fives;and WJCEITEAS, during National-Foster Care Month we,in the City ofYakima, celebrate allthose who have invited childen needinto their hearts andinto their homes; and-express our sincere appreciation for allwho help make foster care and kinship care possible. NOWTICEREFORE,I,Patricia Byers,Mayor of the City ofYakima and-on behalf-of the City Council hereby proclaim the month ofMay as "Foster Care and7cinships Care Month" in the City of Yakima and-urge allits citizens to recognize the valuable service offoster and kinship famines and thank them for their service to children and teens in their community.
