I have raised two children and am raising another two in this fine valley. After our West Valley home sold a couple of months ago I have been baffled at my inability to locate another residence, which is due to a specific city ordinance. I have contacted realtor offices, property management agencies and private property- owners around Yakima and discovered it is difficult to rent a home /unit that accepts animals, let alone a "pit bull terrier" (YMC, 2012). I was not able to find ordinances banning other animals so I surmise that owning any other type of terrier, or other animal, is permitted. The American Kennel Club's (AKC) description of American Staffordshire Terriers portrays these canines as courageous, strong, intelligent and loyal to their family (AKC 2). Our "daughter" loves our family and is loving and patient with children. She is no- nonsense and does not tolerate anyone or any other animal acting in a harmful or negative manner towards our family. • I believe it is time for the city council to re- evaluate this ordinance and find that it is not supported by facts but only by fear. If facts are in fact the driving force behind this ordinance then many other breeds of canines need also be banned from city limits. Please consider these facts about other animals that could be dangerous. It is best to approach the Chow Chow straight -on as they become easily startled from the side or behind (AKC, 1). It is recommended that Great Danes be supervised around children (AKC, 2), and Rottweiler are protective of their territory and do not welcome strangers (AKC, 3). I appreciate your service and am optimistic that this ordinance is on its way out. Instead of holding any specific animal accountable, we must first consider how the dog has been treated and raised. Maybe this will lead to banning dangerous people out of our beautiful community. Resp-ctfully stibm'tted, 01 rat Tara M.
