CITY OE 'YAKIMA
PROCLAMATION
wirEREAs, When Rotary began its mission to eradicate poCio in 1985, more than
350,000 children were stricken with polio every year and nearly 1,000 people were affected by
the crippling disease every day. Since then, polio cases have been reduced by 99% to fewer than
1,300 cases in 2010; and
(WYPEREAS, due to the efforts of rotary and its partners, the world is on the threshold
of ending polio forever - making it only the second disease after smaOCpo.x to be eradicated, and
WVEREAS, to date, rotary has contributed more than $1 billion and countless
volunteer hours to immunize more than 2 billion children — and our workcontinues; Rotary
c(u6s worldwide continue to raise funds for critical poCio eradication activities and ongoing
efforts to raise awareness for polio eradication; and
4N".tfrEREAS, with more than 500 Rotary members in the 'Yakima area and 1.2 million
members worldwide, we feel that there would be significant interest in this event, particularly
given the determined effort of Rotary volunteers to raise the funds needed to fight polio in this
fast, most difficult stage of the eradication initiative,
