Since then, polio cases have been reduced by 99% to fewer than 1,300 cases in 2010; and (WYPEREAS, due to the efforts of rotary and its partners, the world is on the threshold of ending polio forever - making it only the second disease after smaOCpo.x to be eradicated, and WVEREAS, to date, rotary has contributed more than $1 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2 billion children — and our workcontinues; Rotary c(u6s worldwide continue to raise funds for critical poCio eradication activities and ongoing efforts to raise awareness for polio eradication; and 4N".tfrEREAS, with more than 500 Rotary members in the 'Yakima area and 1.2 million members worldwide, we feel that there would be significant interest in this event, particularly given the determined effort of Rotary volunteers to raise the funds needed to fight polio in this fast, most difficult stage of the eradication initiative, WOW, THEREFORE, I Micah Caw Mayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim October 21st through 27th, 2012 as "POLIO ..
