MEMORANDUM
July 5, 2012
TO: The Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: Tony O'Rourke, City Manager
SUBJECT: Weekly Issues Report
• COUNCIL STUDY SESSION: There will be a joint City /County study session on
Tuesday, July 10 at 10:00 a.m. in Council Chambers to review the Airport Master
Plan, air service expansion strategies, and airport management options.
• REGIONAL FIRE AUTHORITY: This Committee (Cawley, Coffey, and Adkison) will
be meeting on Thursday, July 12 at 6:00 p.m. at Fire Station 95.
• SEATTLE CHAMBER VISIT: Members of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce will
be in Yakima on July 12. This visit is a follow up to their April visit. Seattle Chamber
members want to learn more of the innovative and "ground- breaking" work Yakima's
Gang Free Initiative (GFI) and Yakima County Gang Commission (YCGC) are both
doing related to gangs.
• REFUSE CHANGES: On Tuesday, July 10, 2012, the Refuse Division will begin
providing garbage and yard waste collection for approximately 850 residential
customers in the Englewood Annexation area. The area, located between 63
Avenue and 88 Avenue, from Summitview Avenue to Scenic Drive, was annexed
into the city in 2005. In order to maintain sanitary conditions and to alleviate litter
and illegal dumping, all residential dwellings within the City of Yakima are required to
receive refuse collection services (YMC Section 4.16.140 {C }).
• MEETINGS WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS: I asked council members and
department directors to give Cally a list of five people they thought I should make
contact with in my first 60 -90 days on the job. I have several meetings scheduled in
the next few weeks both in and out of the office. If you think of anyone else I should
meet with please let Cally know.
• WATER /IRRIGATION PROJECTS: Water crews will be on S. 44 Ave at
Eisenhower High School completing some hydrant and water service relocations for
the new school. Crews will also be setting a new 12 foot by five foot vault at
Gardner Park for the new remote water fill station.
