SEPTEMBER 1, 1992
ADJOURNED MEETING
The City Council met in session on this date at 11:30 a.m. in the
Rimrock Room at the Holiday Inn, Yakima, Washington for a meeting
with the Chamber of Commerce Executive Board. Council Members
present were Mayor Pat Berndt, Henry Beauchamp (absent after
1:25 p.m.), Lynn Buchanan, Skip Semon and Bernard Sims. Council
Members Clarence Barnett and Bill Brado absent. City staff members
present were City Manager Zais and City Clerk Roberts. Chamber of
Commerce representatives present were Gary Webster, General
Manager, Mike Mercy, Allen Schmid (absent after 12:35 p.m.), Dave
Miller, Al Pruitt, Ken Schiller, Stan Pratt and Curtis King.
Mayor Berndt stated the purpose of this meeting is informal
discussion of concerns of the Chamber of Commerce and concerns of
the City of Yakima.
Gary Webster reported on the Leadership Yakima program, Green -Up --
Clean-Up program, proposed contract with the City, regional tourism
program, legislative priorities, and request for directional signs
to the visitor information center (Chamber of Commerce). Curtis
King gave a briefing on the All American Cities Report. It is a
highly competitive award and may take several attempts to achieve.
The City offered its assistance towards this goal. Mr. Schmid
reported the Chamber of Commerce is in the process of reorganizing.
The Chamber has been condensed from seven council to four
divisions. Mr. Webster suggested a program similar to one done in
the mid -west where a radio station has a call -in program concerning
a "committee of the day" and citizens have an opportunity to
express their opinions regarding that committee. (Mr. King absent
after 12:35 p.m.) Mr. Schmid commented that Chamber members want
to voice their opinion and offer assistance.
The Parks & Recreation request for an additional percentage of the
in- lieu -of tax was discussed. Other issues facing the City were
discussed: proposed law and justice facility funding, DOE
regulations for storm water, Growth Management Act requirements,
economic development (Chamber will sponsor seminars to service the
existing businesses), need for public safety (Police /Legal),
facility, and consolidated long range planning by City, County and
School District. (Council Member Beauchamp absent after 1:25 p.m.)
The meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
