• Coffey called the meeting to order. She advised Ettl would be stepping down from his
position on the GFI committee due to other obligations.
Hughes introduced members of the Yakima County Gang Coalition, a non - profit organization
separate from the Yakima County Gang Commission. Members of the Coalition explained
different programs they are involved in to prevent and intervene with gang membership.
Examples of programs offered are a video production program to introduce life /work skills
and a graffiti alternative program where designs are silk screened onto clothing. Another
intervention program serves approximately 500 youth with 5 case managers. This program
has referred youth to drug and alcohol assessment, mental health resources, reintroduction
into schools and GED programs, and job placement. The case managers have had past
gang ties and are screened prior to having involvement with the youths. Coordinators of this
program feel the youths involved can relate more closely with these case managers, as
opposed to teachers, police officers, or others involved in intervention. The Yakima County
Gang Coalition had not identified any federally approved models or evidence based
strategies. The GFI would like to see YCGC apply the federal models to their program before
partnering.

Sub Committee Updates:
•
MagaIlan advised that the committee is progressing according to schedule. The Community •
Profile report was sent to members prior to the meeting for review and input. Discussion
included the need to keep the document "living" by periodically updating the statistics and
contact information within it. Data should be updated biennially. The conclusion needs to be
fleshed out, but otherwise is ready to be released.
Old Business:
None.
New Business:
Committee level meetings should continue for the next few weeks to finalize the community
profile and prepare to transition to implementation phase.
Coffey stated that a press conference needed to be held to announce the Community Profile.
The report is on the Yakima City Council agenda for August 2 "d , so the release should be
before it goes out in the Council information packets. The press conference was scheduled
for the week of July 25
Good of the Order:
The August Steering committee meeting was cancelled, however, subcommittees should
continue to meet.
Date for next meeting
The next Steering Committee meeting will be September 1, 2011 at 4 p.m. The meeting will
be held at Central Washington Comprehensive Mental Health.
