ADJOURNED MEETING
WITH PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION
JULY 21, 2009 — 12:00 — 1:30 P.M.
HARMAN CENTER AT GAILLEON PARK
1. Roll Call
All Council members were present. Staff included City Manager Zais, Assistant City
Manager Zabel!, Public Works Director Chris Waarvick, Parks and Recreation Manager Ken
Wilkinson and Deputy City Clerk Watkins
2. Discussion of Yakima City Parks and Recreation Facilities, Programs, Collaborations
and Services
Council Members, City staff and representatives from the Parks and Recreation
Commission discussed operations and activities of the City's Parks and Recreation
Division. They spoke about critical economic issues and upcoming budget challenges
that may affect the operation of various facilities. There was also discussion about the
schools getting involved in pool /aquatics issues.
3. Audience Comments (1:15 — 1:30 p.m.
• Joe Carmichael suggested using volunteers to operate the swimming programs.
• Gary McLaughlin agreed with using volunteers and added that possibly service
organizations could become involved as well.
• Alex Deccio spoke about the importance of aquatics in the Valley and the value
of pools in keeping youth busy. He also suggested reviewing the benefit of a
metropolitan park district.
4. Adjournment — 1:44 p.m.
ACTION: Motion to adjourn to the Business Meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the Council
Chambers. VOTE: Unanimous
