This historical landmark was built at the site where the ship landed carrying settlers who founded Jamestown in 1607. Today, Public Works is all around you — when you turn on the water, flush a toilet, drive on a roadway, use park facilities, or take out the trash. • Respectfully submitted is a proclamation from Governor Christine Gregoire proclaiming May 15- 21, 2011 as Public Works Week. This is in recognition of the men and woman in the state of Washington who design, build, operate, and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as Public Works. Public Works is the heartbeat of Yakima where skilled public works professionals play a pivotal role in making your life safe, convenient and comfortable. In closing — we would like to show a short, lighthearted, but thought - provoking video, "A Day without Public Works." Did you know that Yakima's Public Works staff work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year? Public Works staff ensures the annual operation of the following inventory: • maintains 354 miles of roadways • maintains 330 miles of sewer pipes • maintains 180 miles of irrigation water pipes • maintains 300 miles of domestic water pipes • provides 4.2 billion gallons of safe, clean drinking water • treats 3.6 billion gallons of sewage; removing 11 million pounds of pollution prior to discharging to the Yakima River • collects up 31,000 tons of trash and yard waste • mows 333 acres of parks • maintains over 400 service and heavy -duty vehicles • maintains 100 signalized intersections • maintains 5,400 street lights • maintains 26,000 street signs • tests 2,250 fire hydrants • • provides 1.4 million Transit rides • serves 80,000 visits to City pools • serves 40,000 program visits to the Harman Center ms/5/11/2011
