YAKIMA, WASHINGTON
AGENDA STATEMENT
Item No. #11
For Meeting of Nov. 20, 2007
Consideration of a Resolution Declaring Certain Used Police Vehicles
Surplus and Authorizing the City Manager to allow the Washington State
Department of General Services Administration to Sell or Auction these
Vehicles.
SUBMITTED BY: Chief Granato, Police Department
CONTACT PERSON/TELEPHONE: Capt. Jeff Schneider, 575-6151
SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
The Police Department has six used vehicles, which are no longer fit for police service. All of these
vehicles are in poor condition. Police Department studies have shown our maintenance costs for
these older police vehicles are three times that than for newer vehicles, in addition all of these ex -
patrol vehicles have the equivalent of five times the indicated mileage due to engine idle time.
Continuing to operate and maintain any of these cars (including the one low mileage car) would be
a significant cost for the Department as they are nearing major engine and or transmission
replacement. The Department requests that these vehicles be declared surplus and removed from
our inventory.
The Department also would like to allow the Washington State Department of General Services
Administration to sell or auction these vehicles for the City at their surplus property facility in Kent. It
has been the Police Department's experience that used vehicles bring significantly higher sales and
auction prices at the Kent facility than we receive locally.
