Yakima Sport Legends Come to Town June 11 and 12
Parker Youth & Sports Foundation Hosts the Fifth Annual High Hopes Golf Tournament June 12th
Parker Youth & Sports Foundation invites the public to meet legendary sport achievers Friday, June 11th and
Saturday, June 12th Guests will have an opportunity to meet the honorary chairman for this event, former New York
Yankee baseball player and professional pitching coach, Mel Stottlemyre. Returning this year for the reception on
Fnday night, and for the "High Hopes Golf Tournament" on Saturday, is the 2008 Yakima Sport Legends chairman,
Chuck "Bobo" Brayton. There will be several opportunities to meet and talk with the Yakima sports legends.
• Thursday, June 10 - Coach "Bobo" Brayton, Coach Bob Garretson Jr. and Dave Edler will present the
program at noon at the Downtown Yakima Rotary Club meeting. The program is titled, "Home Plate Heroes — 60
years of Yakima Baseball "
• Friday, June 11 : The public is invited to attend the Yakima Sports Legends Reception Fnday, June 11th at the
Clanon Hotel from 6.00 to 9.30 PM Mel Stottlemyre will be honored by the Parker Youth & Sports Foundation
members dunng the program which starts at 7.00 PM. "Bobo" Brayton, Bill Faller, Bob Garretson,Jr , and others
baseball legends, are a part of the program. The cost is $20 and there will be a silent auction Light appetizers are
being served
• Saturday, June 12` The fifth annual "High Hopes Golf Scramble Tournament" is Saturday, June 12 at the Apple
Tree Golf Resort. The tournament has a shot gun start at 8 00 AM The cost is $125 per player and pre - registration
is required
A full schedule of the Sports Legend Event is enclosed with this announcement.
Parker Youth & Sports Foundation began in October 2004 and has awarded over $65,000 m grants to local parks,
Yakima Valley Community College and youth athletic organizations Additional grants will be awarded this spring
Applications for awards are now bemg accepted for the 2010 grant year and they can be obtained by calling the
Foundation office at 509- 496 -9336

Sport Legend, Mel Stottlemyre -
WHEREAS, our community seeks to
pay tribute to individuals who lived in the
Yakima Valley and maintained athletic
lives of discipline and purpose -
WHEREAS, promoting the history of
sports will help preserve parks and athletic
programs for youth -
WHEREAS, Mel Stottlemyre has been on the mound for Yakima, playing
baseball at Mabton High School and at Yakima Junior College, was signed by
the New York Yankees in 1961, and pitched as a Yankee from 1964 to 1974 -
pitched in the 1964 World Series - voted five times a baseball All -Star - has
pitched 40 shutouts with 356 starts, and held a 2.97 earned run average (ERA)
with a .541 winning percentage and earned six World Series Championship
rings -
WHEREAS, Mel Stottlemyre was the pitching coach for six World Series
winning teams (5 New York Yankee championships and one New York Mets
championship) and is the father of former major league players Mel
Stottlemyre Jr. and Todd Stottlemyre, who both graduated from Yakima's
Davis High School -

Yakima has great sport legends and heroes with regional, national, and worldwide acclaim. The Parker
Youth & Sports Foundation is honoring Yakima sports legends this week with "High Hopes" reunion
events
Coach Chuck "Bobo" Brayton - "The Coaches Coach" — played baseball in Yakima under the
undefeatable coach Hub Kittle He then became Coach Brayton - and coached from the 1950's and beyond
He coached at Yakima Valley College for 11 years, winning 10 titles He became Washington State
University's baseball coach and remained for 33 years, winning a record 13 straight Division titles. When
Brayton retired from college coaching in 1994, after 44 years of coaching, he had 1,162 victones and was the 4
wimmngest coach in the history of NCAA Division 1 baseball He took two teams to the College World Series,
placing third in 1965 and fifth in 1976 He was inducted into the American Coaches Hall of Fame 50 years ago
and the National College Baseball Hall of Fame m 2006 Brayton coached over 30 players who went on to big
league baseball. Players from the state of Washington include John Olerud, Aaron Sele, Ken Phelps, Eric
Wilkins, Ron Cey, Tom Neidenfuer and Doug Sisk Yakima players include Scott Hatteberg, Don Crow and
Mel Stottlemyre While coaching at WSU, Brayton coached two local players who went on to create their own
legends. Bob Garretson, Jr and Dave Edler.
Coach Bob Garretson Jr. — "The Legend Keeper" —. is the keeper of a family baseball legacy in Yakima from
the 1960 and beyond. As a player Garretson played at YVCC under Bill Faller and then under Coach Brayton at
WSU where he set a batting average mark of .438 that stood for 25 years Drafted by the Cmcmnati Reds, he
played in the San Diego system He is the son of Bob Garretson, Sr, and between Jr and Sr., the Garretson men
have been a part of Yakima baseball for 70 years From 1940 to 1988, the Yakima American Legion program
had only three coaches 1) John Zaepfel from 1940 to 1959, who had eight state championships, three regional
championships and an American Legion national championship team in 1953, 2) Bob Garretson Sr., who
coached Yakima's Legion baseball team from 1960 to 1974 and had eight state championships; and 3) Bob Jr
who coached the Legion team from 1975 to 1988 and produced 8 state titles teams, two national championships
teams (1975 and 1979), and a third place national team in 1988 Garretson Jr was also head coach of YVCC
baseball for 17 years and retired with a .609 winning percentage Bob Jr coached many Yakima players who
would go on to WSU, mcluding his own son, Mike Bob also coached a developing major - league player named
Dave Edler — who would go on to WSU and play for Coach Brayton.
Dave Edler — the "National Player of the Year" — was raised in Yakima and graduated from
Eisenhower High School He was a standout baseball pitcher and third baseman from 1970 and beyond Dave
played American Legion baseball for Coach Bob Garretson, Jr. and he was on the 1975 Yakima Beetles team
that was the American Legion National Champions that year Dave was named the 1975 National Player of the
Year for American Legion Baseball. He then played for Coach Brayton at Washington State where he was an
All- American, played in the college world series and helped the Cougars win the division title four years in a
row. Dave was drafted by the Seattle Manners and played seven years of professional ball at third base, playing
in the major from 1980 through 1983. A decade later, from 1993 to 1998, Dave was head coach of the Yakima
Pepsi Beetles — directing them to the 1995 Washington State Championship title For 25 years, Dave has
remained involved in counseling youth and for 15 years has been the pastor of Yakima's Foursquare Church
A goal of the Parker Youth & Sports Foundation is to promote the history of sports in order to help
preserve parks and athletic programs for youth Mel Stottlemyre is the honorary chairman of the 2010
