WA 98901 # .;' Telephone: (509) 575-6219 U November 21, 2019 Employee Recognition Nomination Form I believe that the greatest means of preventing crime is a strong partnership with people living or working in areas most impacted by crime. They are in the best position to know who is up to no good. You would think that as victims of crime, they would readily come to the police with information. But that is not the case. And the reason is that these folks are often marginalized and are wary of police — because of historical tension resulting from poor interactions with police. THAT is why I have an expectation for all police employees to provide exceptional customer service. Detective Arturo Medina is a naturally friendly and gregarious person. He is always smiling and loves to help others — especially crime victims. He is also fluent in Spanish and uses his language skills on a routine basis to talk to the community about police. Recently I asked him to accompany me to a meeting of Spanish speaking crime victims because of our new community policing focus. He readily agreed. We thought there would be three folks — but were surprised by THIRTY. A huge opportunity for us to gain relationship and trust. And Detective Medina was amazing. The people asked questions, shared problems, laughed, and even cried. When we were done they applauded and told us there would be 200 people at the next meeting. Detective Medina exemplifies exemplary performance. He supports others, but also the mission. He is an amazing asset to the city and as mentioned, goes far beyond the role of property crimes detective to assist our community. "Make respect a part of every interaction."
