'FWfEcRAS, WorldAIlDS Day began on December 1, 1998 witfi tfie goal of raising money,
increasing awareness,fighting prejudice, and improving education about Jfl`V/AIIDS and
WIFEILEAS, WorldAIlDS Day continues to be an important way to celebrate tfie
e4raordinary advances we (nave made in tfie battle against YEW andAllDS and to remindYakima
residents andpeople everywhere tfiat Jay has not gone away and that much more has yet to be done;
and
`(4 E12cEAS globally, more tfian 22 million people(nave diedfrom AIDS, and more tfian 33
million people are living with Jay though tfie death rate from this disease is slowly declining,
millions have diedfrom this disease and millions more are stiff at tsk and
'FW E AS, every 9.5 minutes someone in tfie 'United States is infected witfi Jay and 1 out
of 7 people are affected and don't k,now; and
WHEXEAS, Yakima has over 24 new cases ofpeople infected with YEW and an estimated
246 tfiat are JfI71 positive and are unaware of their status; and
WXEXEAS, women and children around the world are particularly vulnerable due to gender
inequalities, gaps in access to services and increases in sejualviolence; and
'FW E AS, eipandedlftV testing diagnosis and treatment can help reduce tfie suffering
from this entirely preventable disease,
NOW, TJfEXETOR E. I, ?Cathy Coffey, Mayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf
of the City Council do hereby proclaim December 1, 2019 as
"V ndetectabfe=V ntransmittable Day"
in the City of Yakima and urge all citizens to take part in activities and observances designed to
increase awareness and understanding of.7fI`2/AI1DS as a global challenge, to take part in
9ffvAIrDS prevention activities andprograms, and to join the global effort to prevent the further
spread ofl[I`V/AI1DS.
