HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
Minutes fox Meeting of August 24, 2016
I. CaII to Order
Commission Chair Kenmotsu called the meeting to order at approximately 5:30 P.M.

Present: Leslie Wahl, Karl Pasten, Nancy Kenmotsu, Nancy Rayner,
Whitney Stohr, Molly Storrs
Absent: Joe Mann (excused)
Quorum: Quorum present
Staff: Historic Preservation Liaison Trevor Martin
III. New Business
A. Approval of June Meeting Minutes
Nancy Rayner made a motion to accept the meeting minutes from June. Whitney Stohr
seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. Kenmotsu added that no minutes were
taken for the July meeting due to the lack of a quorum.
B. Introduction of New Historic District Proposal — Historic Fruit Row
Audience member George Pechtel provided history and background information on Yakima's
historic district and its association with agriculture productivity. Pechtel described his efforts
with the Planning Division to pursue establishing a historic fruit row district. Nancy Rayner
made a motion to endorse the concept of creation of a historic fruit row district in Yakima and
to forward a recommendation to a council committee for further review and consideration, with
notice being provided to property owners in the proposed district of meetings where setting up
the district would be discussed. Molly Storrs seconded the motion. The motion carried
unanimously.
C. Update on Historic Preservation Element
Trevor Martin provided the second draft of the Historic Preservation Element to the
Commission, adding that it appears to be ready to incorporate in the Comprehensive Plan
2040 Update.
IV. Other Business
A. General Discussion of Other Items Not on the Agenda
Avina Gutierrez mentioned that City Council has approved for the Parks Department to
construct a new storage facility at Kiwanis Park. She expressed her interest in hearing ideas
for what can be done with the existing incinerator building on site which the Parks Department
was previously using for storage. The Commission had consensus for Avina Gutierrez to
reach out to the Kiwanis Group for their thoughts on how it could be utilized.

Discussion ensued regarding the DAHP grant cycle.
Nancy Kenmotsu shared that the Yakima Valley Museum is opening a new exhibit on
September 16th. Kenmotsu also shared that the museum has an annual event called Red into
Black which will be taking place on November 5th
Nancy Rayner reminded everyone that the Historic Preservation Commission has a booth in
the Yakima Farmer's Market and will be present on September 4th

None noted.
VI. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 6:35 p.m. to the next scheduled meeting which will be
held on Wednesday, September 28th, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
