Meeting AGENDA JULY 2, 2019 Sandra - Intro of self and representing City Integration Committee Terri- Intros of team members;short presentation about the Census (include the hand-out) Laura-summary of coalition's work Ruby-Ask for the support-- • Letter of Support for any future grant applications • Proclamation of Census Day during the Tuesday, March 31st City Council meeting proclaiming April 1 as local Census Day in Yakima • Connection to their communication's department to help promote the census on City website in a visible place on the website--including April 1 2020 (which is census day) and any presentations that we will have for the public • Utilize City communications platforms to share information about 2020 Census and the local Coalition & involve the Coalition in the events they are part of(for example: National Night Out) In July 2018 the Yakima Valley Community foundation invited groups and organizations to a meeting at the Henry Beauchamp Community Center to discuss the 2020 Census and the historically undercounted areas of South Central Washington. The meeting was arranged by the following organizations: More Equitable Democracy, WA Progress Alliance, Win-Win, La Casa Hogar and Yakima Valley Community Foundation. Several local organizations created a coalition that has been meeting bi-monthly and established infrastructure in a short time. Coalition representatives are part of regional and statewide efforts around the census to ensure representation of historically undercounted communities in Eastern Washington. Over the past year, the Coalition has: • Created the Yakama Yakima El Censo 2020 Coalition with a logo, core values and Mission statement: To ensure historically undercounted communities of color, low income and underserved communities throughout south-central Washington are counted in the 2020 census. • Provided 2020 Census Presentations to City Of Yakima Community Integration Committee, KDNA Census 101, Investing in Children Coalition, Central WA Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, May 1st Equality & Justice march • Hired a Coalition Coordinator & Organizer, Ruby Silva • Acquired Office Space at Radio KDNA • Obtained representation at statewide Census Complete Count Committees Next steps moving forward: • Ruby will be point of contact for agencies, outreach events and presentations as we learn share and partner. • Collaborate with city officials & offices for key areas of communication • Data & Technology—be a pillar of the work and step by step guide from beginning stages — to full implementation What is the Census? • The official population count of the United States • Every 10 years! • The first US census was taken in 1790 • Mandated by Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution • Census data is used to: • Determine the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives • Allocate billions $$ in federal funds to local communities Census 2020 Implementation Who: Administered by the the U.S. Department of Commerce, Census Bureau to obtain an accurate count of all people living in the United States based on where you live and sleep most of the time (includes H2A workers, infants, immigrants, college students, etc.) What: A form that will ask for personal information such as age, gender, residency, race and ethnicity. Data is "confidential by law". Core Values: Transparency, Respect of all people present—each voice has weight, Confidentiality, Openness, Willingness to collaborate (not compete), Mutually agreed upon ethics, Integrity, Commitment, Vision, Accountability, Politically unbiased (nonpartisan), Intentionally shared power and collective action, participatory democracy prioritizing those who are most often historically and presently excluded, trust. Groups currently participating: People for People, La Casa Hogar, Nuestra Casa, Asian Pacific Islander Coalition, members of the Yakama Na- tion, More Equitable Democracy, Yakima Valley Community Foundation, Planned Parenthood, OneAmerica Proposed Structure: Organizations and community members interested in participating will create and sign a mutually agreed upon state- ment of commitment. Those committed will comprise the "Directive Coalition". Within the coalition, there will be sub-committee groups (including: technology, outreach, media/marketing, funding, coalition governance, local government education, coalition self-education, statewide committee participation and language access). The Directive Coalition members will divide themselves based on interest and avail- ability among the sub-committees. Sub-committees will create collaborative workplans and then share those with the full group in the coali- tion. There will be one sub-committee that is the Hiring/Supervisory Committee which will consist of 3-5 members of the Directive Coalition. This sub-committee will be responsible for hiring and collectively supervising two hired staff members to work on census work through 2020. The work of the two hired individuals will come from all of the sub-committees and will be supervised by the specific supervisory committee. The two individuals hired will be: 1) Yakama Tribal member and 2) Latinx bilingual community member. These two individuals will work to- gether and will also collaborate with other census-related employees throughout the region (hired by the county, the state government, etc.) Fiscal Sponsorship:The Yakima Valley Community Foundation is the fiscal sponsor for this Coalition. See Page 2 for the image demonstrating this vision.
