A JOINT RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA AND YAKIMA COUNTY
honoring Charles Dunn "Charlie" McAllister
by renaming the Yakima Air Terminal
"Yakima International Airport - McAllister Field"
WHEREAS, the honorable Charles Dunn "Charlie" McAllister is a native son of
the Yakima Valley whom all members of the community hold in highest esteem, and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister has been instrumental in the development of
aviation in this area by participating in the earliest development of the current Yakima
Air Terminal by helping to clear the original field of sage and scrub, and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister is the second person to land an aircraft at the site
of the present day Yakima Air Terminal, and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister built and piloted the glider, Yakima Clipper; and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister challenged the Europeans for the World Record
Longest Glider Flight in 1933, and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister has operated a school and has personally trained
approximately 1,500 pilots since 1926, now an unequaled record, and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister, to the unending benefit of his student pilots and
the public at large, has steadfastly promoted the basic principles of safety and caution,
as expressed in the adage:
"There are bold pilots,
and there are old pilots,
but no old bold pilots."
and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister has walked away from 16 forced landings and
three crackups, and

WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister has for over seventy years consistently promoted
and helped to advance aviation and has, through his personal example, inspired the
aviation industry and the wider community; and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister has received abundant recognition and
numerous awards from various military branches including:
Commander's Certificate - Fort Lewis I Corps
304th Air Rescue Squadron
Cobra Attack Troop, 116th ACR
Air Attack Group, T.F 540
"Air Power Award" - 9405th Air Force Reserve Squadron
United States Air Force Thunderbirds
Canadian Air Force "Snowbirds"
United States Navy Blue Angels
and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister has received a Certificate of Recognition from the
United States Department of Transportation, Federal. Aviation Agency; and
WHEREAS, Charlie McAllister has received numerous honors and recognition
within the General Aviation commuruty including:
Named "Mr OX -5" for 1990
Named "Aviation Man of the Year" for 1976 by Washington Wing of OX -5
OX -5 Appreciation for 50 years as Fixed Base Operator
Creighton Merrill Award "For Inspired and Dedicated Service to Aviation"
and
WHEREAS, pursuant to chapter 14.08, and by the Joint Air Terminal Operations
Agreement dated June 30, 1982, the City of Yakima and Yakima County jointly own and
operate the airport known as the Yakima Air Terminal at Yakima, Washington, and
WHEREAS, numerous members of the community have petitioned the Board of
Yakima County Commissioners and the Yakima City Council to honor Charlie
McAllister by renaming the airport to include his name; and
WHEREAS, numerous community organizations have endorsed the petition
drive to rename the airport in Charlie McAllister's honor, including
Yakima AirFair Board
Yakima Valley Chapter 206 Experimental Aircraft Association
Toppenish Mural Society
Yakima Valley Museum
Central Washington Agricultural Museum
Yakima Valley Historical Society
Yakima County Society for Historic Preservation

WHEREAS, it is not only in the best interest of the County and the City, but it is
an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to extend such richly deserved
recognition and to let future generations know of a special person who has contributed
so much to the Yakima Valley, now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF YAKIMA COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AND THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
The airport shall henceforth be known by the name:
"YAKIMA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - MCALLISTER FIELD"
and the Joint Air Terminal Operations Agreement dated June 30, 1982, is hereby
amended accordingly
ADOPTED BY THE BOARD OF YAKIMA COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
