• Kathy Coffey welcomed the steering committee members and thanked Beraza for hosting the
meeting
Introductions were given Coffey reported that Councilmember EttI replaced Councilmember
Lover on the Steering Committee
Discuss meeting location. The Committee members discussed locations for the meeting
Since YSD worked for everyone and the room has audio /visual capabilities, it was decided to
hold future meetings here Beraza will check the calendar for availability
Approve August 26 minutes. The minutes from the September 8 meeting were reviewed
Folsom -Hill motioned to accept the minutes as presented and Beraza seconded the motion
The motion passed unanimously
Director's Report
o Coordinator update A press release was sent out announcing that Steve
Magallan would be the GFI Consultant. There was discussion about the
salary/fee that was going to be paid Coffey stated that there is a total of
$75,000 budget for Magallan He will be paid an hourly rate of $90 for his work
and submitted a breakdown of the projects and time involved for each The fee
does not include travel time Granato reported that Magallan will be working on
a community needs assessment which is required to access grant funds
• o Focus discussion Merryman reported that he will be meeting with Magallan on
Monday to discuss the plan
o Next steps Magallan will provide leadership training to the Committee and the
Sub - Committees

Merryman shared some statistics for Yakima and LA. Statistics show that violence is
continually getting worse all over the country
Sub - Committee Updates.
Prevention Gutierrez reported that the prevention committee met. The group
discussed the possibility of holding a gang meeting and orientation for the community
at Washington Middle School in the next few weeks Beraza suggested that the group
also consider having a booth at the Parents Forum in November
Coffey stated that she was asked to speak to a group of school counselors Some of
the feedback from the students (through the counselors) was that:
-kids need more after school activities held at the schools
-a mentoring program for the youth would be a great idea
Intervention Rodriguez offered to chair the committee
Suppression Granato reported that the group met. They have been working on the
nuisance properties and things are going very well There was open discussion
regarding the Crime Analyst Supervisor position and budget reductions DeVilleneuve
made the motion that the Steering Committee support the crime analyst position
Folsom -Hill seconded the motion The motion passed unanimously DeVilleneuve will
draft a letter to the City Council on the Committee's behalf
Student Participation Update. Beraza introduced the student committee members and
explained that the students will be full participants with voting rights
Good of the Order: Ettl reported that the City Council Economic Development Committee
has authorized $100,000 in block grant funds to be used on crime prevention The City will
install additional lighting and shields in north east and north central Yakima
Folsom commented that lighting is being blocked by trees in various areas If the problem is
on private property the homeowner needs to take care of it. If the problem is in a right of way
or on City property, the street department will take care of it.
Gutierrez distributed a report from the Yakima County Comprehensive Youth Gang Initiative
outlining how the federal funds were distributed
Date for the next meeting. The next Steering Committee meeting will be Wednesday, October
20 at 4 00 p m at YSD Administration Building (104 N 4 Avenue)

5 30 p m , at the Yakima School District Administration Building, 104 North 4 Avenue
