WilEREAS, on Wlarcfi 22, 1972, President Wicfiard Nixon signed into Caw a measure tfiat
amended the Order Americans Act of 1965 and estabCished a national nutrition program for seniors 60
years or order, and
WilEREAS, Wears on Wheels America estabCished the Wlarch for Weals campaign in Ski arch
2002 to recognize tfie historic month, the importance of the Order Americans Act Nutrition Programs,
both congregate and fiome delivered, and raise awareness about tfie escalating problem of senior hunger
in America; and
Wi EcEAS tfie 2019 observance ofslffarch for Weals celebrates 17years of providing an
opportunity to support Weals on Wheels programs tfiat deriver vital and critical services by donating,
volunteering and raising awareness about senior hunger and isolation; and
Wi EREAS People Tor People Wlears-On-Wheels programs— both congregate and fiome
delivered, in Yakima County have served our communities admirably for more than 50 years; and
WIFEREAS, volunteers for People For People Steals-On-Wheels programs in Yakima County
are tfie backbone of tfie program and they not only deliver nutritious meals to seniors and individuals
with disabilities who are at significant riskof hunger and isolation, but also caring concern and
attention to tfieir welfare; and
tWREREAS, People For People Sfears-On-Wheels programs in Yakima County provide
nutritious meals to seniors throughout Yakima County tfiat help them maintain tfieir health and
independence, thereby preventing unnecessary falls, hospitalizations and/or premature
institutionalization; and
tWREREAS, People For People WIeals-On-PUheels programs in Yakima County provide a
powerful socialization opportunity formillions of seniors to help combat loneliness and isolation; and
WIFEREAS, People For People Sfears-On-Wheels programs in Yakima County deserve
recognition for tfie contributions tfiey have made and will continue to make to focal communities, our
State and our Nation.
NOW, 77FERETOR,E, I?Cathy Coffey, WIayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf of the
Yakima City Council, do hereby proclaim WI arch 2019 as the
"17th Annual fktarch for meals Wtontli"
in the City of Yakima and urge every citizen to take this month to honor our Wears-On-Wheels
programs, the seniors tfiey serve and the volunteers who care for them. Our recognition of and
involvement in, the national.2019 skfarch for Wears can enrich our entire community and help combat
senior hunger and isolation in America.
