HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/30/1977 Special Meeting 54 1 SPECIAL MEETING - THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 1977 The City Council met in session on this date at 2:00 P.M. in the Con- ference Room at City Hall, Yakima, Washington. Councilmen present at the meeting were Mayor Betty L. Edmondson, Jean Allard, Ralph Holbrook, W. K. "Pete" Moore, Dr. Bill Simmons, Nadine Walker and Gordon Wonder. Also present were Dr. Dean Starr,-Don Breiten- feldt and Virginia Hislop of the Yakima School District. Mayor Edmondson announced that Governor Dixy Lee Ray will hold the fourth Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, July 12, 1977, at the Yakima Con- vention Center between 7:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. There will be a recep- tion following and everyone is invited to attend. The Governor's Cabinet will accompany her, and this is an excellent opportunity for citizens to come and ask questions and get information on State govern- ment. City Manager Eastman reported that at the preliminary meeting with the Yakima School District, the following projects were prioritized in this order, to be submitted for the EDA grant: 1. Naches /Yakima Avenue Intersection Improvements $155,000 2. Yakima Avenue Resurfacing Project (6th Avenue to 8th Street) $170,000 3. Adams School Multi- purpose Room $400,000 4. Capitol Theatre $1,600,000 5. Addition Improvements to Yakima City Shops and Maintenance Complex $355,439 6. Tennis Courts at Washington Junior High and Lewis and Clark School $ 87,000 City Manager Eastman stated that the Shops improvements are the most vulnerable for cutbacks if the City should not receive the $2,649,000 expected. City Manager Eastman stated that, if approved, the priority list will be mailed tomorrow, and the applications will be hand de- livered to EDA. Dr. Dean Starr reported that the multi - purpose room at Adams School would be used for a lunch room and other uses during the day, and also can be used by the community at night. Dr. Starr said he agreed with the order of the projects. Virginia Hislop informed Council that there aren't any tennis courts on the east side of town. The School District would like to have six courts each at Washington Junior High and Lewis and Clark Junior High, and bring the number of courts at Davis High School up to six from four. Dr. Starr stated that the School District is looking at heavy restric- tions under Title IX, which requires equal number of sports for men and women. Dr. Starr asked Council to keep the need for the tennis courts in mind. Council discussed the possibility of trimming the amount needed for the Capitol Theatre and using that money for the tennis courts. Mayor Edmondson suggested that maybe Council could look at a bond issue. Glenn Rice, Director of Community Development, stated that it is possi- ble to use Community Development Block Grant money for the tennis courts at Washington Junior High School because it is located in our "target area ". It was MOVED by Moore, seconded by Walker to accept the prioritization of these projects and assure the School District the Council will make every effort to work on the tennis court situation: carried, Edmondson, Holbrook, Moore, Simmons, Walker and Wonder voting aye by voice vote.
