ITEM TITLE: Ordinance amending the City of Yakima Municipal Code Section
2.20.089 regarding bilingual pay for management employees

SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
This ordinance is a modification of bilingual pay for management employees. The ordinance
increases the amount of compensation from $60 to $120 per month to be more consistent with
the 3% of base pay that collective bargaining agreements provide for non -management group
employees.

ORDINANCE NO. 2018 -
ORDINANCE amending the City of Yakima Municipal Code Section 2.20.089 regarding
bilingual pay for management employees
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF YAKIMA:
Section 1. Section 2.20.089 of City of Yakima Municipal Code is hereby amended to
read as follows:
2.20.089 Bilingual pay for management employees.
In addition to the prescribed rates of pay and allowances provided for in this chapter,
management employees who have a bilingual capacity shall receive sixtyone hundred
twenty dollars per month for their work in that capacity subject to prior written approval
from their respective department head and subject to achieving a passing score on the
bilingual/biliterate skills examination conducted under the civil service rules and
regulations and administered by the civil service chief examiner. Department heads may
waive the testing requirement if the employec can dcmonctratc to thc satisfaction of thc
department head, through documentation or otherwise (i.e., court interpreter certification
from the state of Washington), that the employee has sufficient bilingual/biliterate skills.

Section 2. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect 30 days after its passage,
approval, and publication as provided by law and by the City Charter.
