21%IfEc1ZEAS, our present-day city of (Yakima, Washington was established
by the northern Paci.fic Railroad in 1885 and named Worth (Yakima to distinguish
the new town from the existing (Yakima City, which was located four miles south;
and
(WIFEREAS, the northern Pacific Railroad encouraged people to move from
'Yakima City to Worth 'Yakima by offering free rots in the new city during the first
months of 1886; and
211ER,EAS, many people took advantage of the offer, causing the county
seat to be moved from 'Yakima City to Worth 'Yakima also in 1886; and
' 4IE REAS, Worth (Yakima soon became the principal city in the 'Yakima
(Caffey; and
' 4IE REAS, having two cities bearing almost the same name adjacent to
each other caused confusion; and
21,1fEcq?.EAS, to eliminate this confusion, in June of 1917, 'Yakima City
officially changed its name to union Gap and, effective January 1, 1918, City of
Worth (Yakima became the City of (Yakima; and
' 4 I E RSEAS, January 1, 2018 marks the 100th Anniversary of the adoption
of the present name of (Yakima,
