WJ EREAS, adequate housing is essential -for healthy families and communities; and
W E1 AS, winter poses extreme hardship for the 21,112 homeless counted this year in
Washington State; the 70 unsheltered and 502 inadequately housed men, women and children in
Yakima County; and the 690 youth in the county estimated by the state Office of 9fomeless Youth to
be either unaccompanied homeless students or youth receiving homeless services or housing; and
WJFEREAS, we recognize through coordinated efforts of local service providers and
community volunteers, the number of unsheltered homeless individuals has been reduced significantly
in the last 10 years; and
`Gt' L RAS, in remembering the 20 people known to have died in Yakima this year without
homes and those unknown to us in name who have died earlier than they should because of
experiencing homelessness in their fives; and
WJFEREAS, December 21st has been designated National-Momeless Persons' 34emoriafDay
by the National Coalition for the Momeless and the National- Wealth Care for the Momeless Council
and is so recognized by cities nationwide; and
WJFEREAS, in this season of generosity and sharing, citizens of Yakima are encouraged to
commit themselves to promoting compassion and concern for all brothers and sisters, especially those
who are poor and homeless; and
WJ EREAS, in remembering those who have died on the streets, the cause of ending
homelessness is kept urgent, as is the community's collective commitment to preventing such deaths in
the future.
NOW, 7.7fEREFORE, 1 Kathy Coffey, U'tayor of the City of Yakima and on behalf of the
City Council, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, December 21, 2017, as
"xomeless Persons' fVLemoriallDay "
in the City of Yakima in recognition of the people who have died without a home, from ailments or
conditions directly related to homelessness, I hereby askall residents to take a moment of silence in
remembrance and encourage support for all local efforts to eliminate homelessness in our community.
