SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
Hanshi Morris Mack opened the Yakima School of Karate in 1961 and operated it continuously
until shortly before he passed away on August 14th, 2017. Hanshi Mack was a respected and
renowned visionary within the martial arts community regionally, nationally, and internationally. His
extraordinary impact on the Yakima community extended well beyond the dojo and inspired
everyone who encountered him to constantly seek out opportunities to be of service to others.
In honor of the tremendous contributions Hanshi Mack made to the Yakima community, to martial
arts, and to the world, September 19th, 2017 will be proclaimed "Hanshi Morris Mack Day" by the
Yakima City Council at its business meeting that same day. Shihan Kara Mack, Hanshi Mack's
wife, will be accepting the proclamation.

WHEREAS, .i-fanshi Morris Mack founded the (Yakima School -of Karate in 1961 and
operated the school -continuously for56years until -shortly before he passed away on August
14th, 2017; and
WHEREAS, .ifanshi Wtackintroduced the art ofShudokan Karate -do to the
Northwest, founded the American ShudokanAssociation, and was a respected and renowned
visionary within the martial -arts community regionally, nationally, andinternationally; and
WHEREAS, .ifanshi Wtacknot only taught thousands upon thousands of students
invaluable self-defense skills, but instilled in them positive values including self-confidence,
how to enjoy healthy, fulfilling relationships, how to live happily in society, how to improve
our community, and the importance of loyalty; and
WHEREAS, .ifanshi Wtacknot only promoted those values, but lived them each and
every day; and
WHEREAS, .ifanshi Macks instrumentalcontributions to andimmeasurable
leadership within Shudokan Karate -do were recognized and honored when he was promoted
to the rankof]urian (10th degree black belt) on July 28th, 2017, becoming the firstAmerican
to achieve the highest rankawarded in Shudokan Karate -do; and
WHEREAS, .ifanshi Macks extraordinary impact on the (Yakima community extended
well beyond the dojo, including partnerships with the DARE program, the (Yakima Police
Department, andschool& in (Yakima, Setah, and the Lower `Valley helping teach at-riskyouth.
NOW, TJPERETORE, 1, Kathy Coffey, Mayor of the City of (Yakima and on behalf
of the City Council- do hereby proclaim Tuesday, September 19th, 2017 as

in the City of (Yakima and encourage all community members to embrace the principles and
ideal& .i-fanshi Mackspent his lifetime passing on to others in order to make the world a better
place, which .i-fanshiWtackmostcertainly did.
