For Meeting of: June 20, 2017 ITEM TITLE: Resolution authorizing the re -dedication of Lions Pool to include Betty Edmondson SUBMITTED BY: Ken Wilkinson, Parks and Recreation Manager 509-576-6416 Scott Schafer, Director of Public Works 509-576-6411 SUMMARY EXPLANATION: In the fall of 2016, Ken Wilkinson received a request from George "Spud" Edmondson to rededicate Lion's Pool to both his parents, Mer and Betty Edmondson. Mer Edmondson was a Parks and Recreation Commissioner from 1962 to 1981 and in recognition of his many years of service to the City's recreational programs in general and aquatics programs in particular, Lion's Pool was dedicated to the memory of him in 1986. Betty Edmondson served as the first female mayor to the Yakima City Council. She was also influential and instrumental in creating the Miller Park Senior Center, which has now morphed into the Harman Center. She served on many committees and was a member of many organizations throughout the City of Yakima. ITEM BUDGETED: STRATEGIC PRIORITY: APPROVED FOR ,,. R -2017- A RESOLUTION authorizing the addition of Betty Edmondson to the previous Lion's Pool dedication to Mer Edmondson, Betty Edmondson's husband. WHEREAS, currently, the Lion's Pool building is dedicated by the City Council to the memory of Mer Edmondson, RESOLUTION NO. D 5226A, May 11, 1986, in recognition of his many years of service devoted to the City recreational programs in general, and the aquatics programs in particular; and WHEREAS, Mer Edmondson was a member of the Metropolitan Park District Board and the City Park and Recreation Commission from 1962 to 1981, having served as chairman of that Commission from 1972 until 1981; and WHEREAS, the City of Yakima chooses names for public parks and parks and recreation facilities dedications based upon an established criteria; and WHEREAS, one of the criteria seeks to identify "an individual who has contributed outstanding civic service to the City of Yakima primarily in the area of Parks and Recreation and who has been deceased for a period of at least one year"; and WHEREAS, Betty Edmondson also contributed greatly to the City of Yakima, serving as the first female mayor to the City Council, was influential and instrumental in creating the Miller Park Senior Center, served on the Allied Arts Council and was influential and active in many other quality of life organizations in Yakima; and WHEREAS, The City Council designates dedications of deserving individuals for public parks and parks and recreation facilities; and WHEREAS, the City Council has received a recommendation from Yakima's Parks and Recreation Commission, based upon public input from individuals and organizations, to add Betty Edmondson to the Lion's Pool building dedication; now, therefore BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF YAKIMA: Lion's Pool is rededicated to include Betty Edmondson, along with her husband Mer Edmondson, in recognition of both of their individual contributions to the City of Yakima and the City's Parks and Recreation Programs, said rededication to be represented by the placement of an appropriate commemorative plaque in the pool area.
